The Town of Easthampton was first settled in 1664 and incorporated as a town on June 17, 1765. With the changeover to a mayor form of government, the town became a city in 1999.
To celebrate its incorporation the citizens of the town constructed an octagonal gazebo in the park one block north of the Town Hall. The gazebo has ornate woodwork and a cupola with a bronze eagle weathervane. An aluminum plaque noting the commemoration is located in a very unusual place. It is located, almost unnoticed, in the center of the octagonal rafters of the gazebo. The plaque is inscribed:
