This flame of freedom was placed by the American Legion in Jarvis Plaza in 1961. It is located in the center of the Matamoros street-side entry to Jarvis Plaza, across from the US Post Office.
The flame is made of three flat pieces of metal arranged in a pyramid around a straight cylindrical burner. The flame dances at the top. The burner assembly is placed on a tall rectangular pillar of polished Texas pink granite, with a shield-shaped plaque affixed to the front and a relief pattern engraved at the top.
The plaque reads as follows:
"To the city of Laredo on the 50th anniversary of the American Legion, and as a tribute to all veterans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America to preserve our freedom, on this the 15th day of March 1961."
