In 1773, Tapping Reeve and Sally Burr Reeve settled in Litchfield where Tapping Reeve began to practice law. In 1774, Tapping Reeves brother-in-law, Aaron Burr, came to live with them and Reeve began to teach him law. Subsequently, several prominent residents of Litchfield also sent their sons to Reeve for legal training. This establishing his reputation as a teacher and began America's first formal school of law. More than 1,100 students attended the school before it closed in 1833.

There are two signs on the property attesting to this distinction. A newer hanging sign near the street is inscribed:

Aaron Burr later became a senator from New York and Vice President of the United States. He is infamous for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
