The 4.75' high granite drum, created by and unknown sculptor in 1894, is set on a two-step granite base. It is located in behind a section of 24 marble headstones of Civil War veterans. The base has the inscription MUSTERED OUT. The surface of the body of the drum is polished as are the ropes used for tightening the drum-heads.

Drums were used in the Civil War for sending messages and giving orders, as well as for band instruments. Drums are used in the "mustering out" ceremony when a unit or concludes its war time service. Mustered out also applies tho individuals being discharged from service.
