After I heard the story of the founding and building of St Paul's Episcopal Church, I was given a book on the church's history and was fascinated by this mysterious spinster who gave so generously toward its building project. A stipulation for funding the church building was that the congregation was restricted from purchasing pews and having "rights" to sit in that given location. It was to be a "free" church where anyone can sit where they please. Today that practice is still in effect.
The sanctuary was remodeled in recent years which allowed the organ pipes to be relocated and the nave to be expanded. The stained glass windows depict Biblical and historical events. Various dedication plaques are seen discreetly placed around the various elements of the building, giving evidence that that same spirit of generosity still exists within the congregation.
The initial focus of St Paul's ministry was to minister to the military men serving at Fort Sam Houston Army Base. It quickly spread to the whole of San Antonio, but it still is an integral part of may soldiers' lives from across the street. This church is located at 1018 E. Grayson Street, San Antonio, TX, at the corner of E Grayson and Willow Streets. Services are held Sunday from 8:00 - 10:30 am and Wednesday 10:30 am.

Formed in 1883 to serve the Fort Sam Houston community, St. Paul's parish at once made plans for this edifice. The Rt. Rev. R.W. B. Elliott, first Bishop of the Missionary district of west Texas, donated the site. Miss Mary Coles of Philadelphia, PA., added funds to local subscriptions and hired the architect. The Gothic style church, built of native stone, was consecrated by Bishop Elliott on October 25, 1885. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1962
