[DE] Die Talsperre wurde von 1908 bis 1913 errichtet um den steigenden Bedarf an Wasser im Ruhrgebiet zu stillen.
In der Nacht vom 16. auf den 17. Mai 1943 wurde die Sperrmauer von einer britischen Bombe getroffen, die eigens für diese Opperation entworfen wurde. Durch die bis zu 12 m hohe Flutwelle starben etwa 1600 Menschen in einer Entfernung von bis zu 100 km Stromabwärts.
Die Entstandenen Schäden an der Mauer konnten bereits bis zum 3.8.1943 repariert werden.
Heutzutage dient die Talsperre primär der Niedrigwasseraufhöhung der Ruhr.
[ENG] The dam was built from 1908 to 1913. It should back up water supply of the Ruhr area.
In the night of 16 to 17 May 1943, the dam was hit by a British bomb, which was designed specifically for this opperation. By the up to 12 m high tsunami about 1600 people died at a distance of up to 100 km downstream.
The resulting damage to the wall have already been repaired until 03/08/1943.
Nowadays, the dam serves primarily to the raising of low water levels of the Ruhr.
