A stone stele in left of the center path in front of the Woodward Memorial Library has a bronze plaque with the following inscription:
INGHAM UNIVERSITY
ON THIS CAMPUS MARIETTA AND EMILY INGHAM OF SAYBROOK,
CONNECTICUT, FOUNDED LE ROY FEMALE SEMINARY, WHICH BECAME, BY CHARTER
ON APRIL 28, 1857, THE FIRST UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN IN THE UNITED
STATES, GRANTING DEGREES IN THE HUMANITIES, FINE ARTS AND MUSIC. THE
PRESENCE OF THIS UNIVERSITY, OFFERING SUPERIOR EDUCATION FOR GIRLS
FROM PRIMARY THROUGH GRADUATE SCHOOL, NOTABLY RAISED THE CULTURAL
ENVIRONMENT OF THIS COUNTRY VILLAGE. THE SPIRIT OF INGHAM, THROUGH THE
PERVASIVE INFLUENCE OF THE TEACHERS IT SENT FORTH THROUGHOUT THE LAND,
STILL PRESENTS A CHALLENGE TO EACH NEW GENERATION.

ERECTED 1965 BY LEROY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
Due to financial difficulties, the college closed in 1892. Many of the buildings were demolished. The material from final building to be dismantled, Art Conservatory, was used to create the Woodward Memorial Library.
