In the Second World War in Harderwijk 117 allied airmen were killed. Among them are Americans, British, Canadians, South Africans and New Zealanders.

45 of them are buried in Harderwijk; the others are at war cemeteries or was never recovered.
Above the IJsselmeer were some major routes into Germany. Allied planes were shot down by German anti-aircraft guns which had been placed at Harderwijk. Most aircraft were to land there after they had flown over the IJsselmeer as long as possible.
