The next morning the pilot was found in the vicinity of the plane. It was Shillitoe John Burton, an English pilot. He was 23 years old and in the afternoon with his Spitfire IX PT-649 took off from the base Belgian Grimbergen. His goal was an "armed reconnaissance" along the railroad Zwolle - Amersfoort. That meant disable trains and destroy trucks on the road. Shillitoe was not alone. There flew 127 aircraft. They were Spitfires, Mustangs, Mosquitos and Typhoons. The German artillery was in action. Gear Shillitoe was hit, lost a wing and plunged to the ground. For the pilot, there was no possibility even to jump out of the burning plane. It is also sometimes said that the device of Shillitoe inadvertently touched by the fire of a fellow pilot. But proving this are not there. The next day he was found dead. He was buried in the cemetery at the Eperweg and there is his grave can still be found.
