So you want to see the Grand Canyon but don’t want to deal with the crowds? Then the Tuweep area of Grand Canyon National Park may be just the spot for you. And getting there can be great fun! That is if you consider driving 60 miles over dirt roads fun. And, depending on your vehicle, you may have to walk the last three miles. But it’s a lovely walk through some wonderfully unspoiled desert terrain with zero commercialization (you’ll have to buy your souvenirs somewhere else). It can take a year for the Tuweep area to attract as many visitors as the more popular south rim areas might get in a single day!

The canyon is very narrow and very steep at this point affording views almost straight down to the Colorado River lying over 3000 feet below the edge. There are some campsites available by reservation but that’s about it. As the park brochure states, there is no water, gas, food or lodging and don’t expect to get a signal on your cell phone.

The postal card was issued in conjunction with the “1972 – Tourism Year of the Americas” program (a product of the Organization of American States). Several western hemisphere countries issued corresponding adhesive postage stamps but the United States chose to issue a set of five postal cards of varying denominations, each showing different tourist destinations on both the stamp indicia and on the obverse. This particular card bears the then current airmail rate of 9 cents and curiously shows an unusual view of the Grand Canyon looking west from the Toroweap Overlook.
