The Returned Soldier is a 6.25' by 3.25' by 4.25' sculpture made from Carrara marble. It rests on a 4.5' by 4' by 4.5' gray granite base. The sculpture was created by Larkin Goldsmith Mead in 1867. it is a replica of the sculpture Mead created while in Italy in 1865.
The sculpture depicts a seated Civil War Union cavalry officer. He has a moustache and wavy hair. He is wearing a coat with wide lapels, a cape, which is covers his shoulders, and knee high boots. A sword rests on the ground by his left foot. He is holding a young girl on his left knee with his left arm. The girl is barefoot and is wearing a short-sleeved dress. She has her left hand near his right shoulder and her right hand near her heart.
A bronze plaque on the top of the base is inscribed:
