A touching memorial in Rotary Park in downtown Mission stands, reminding us that across the Atlantic Ocean, countries and cities are still grateful for the sacrifice of American lives in rolling back the Nazi scourge.

A slab of foreign limestone stands in the place of honor at Rotary Park in downtown Mission, Texas, the gift of the citizens Cadier en Keer, Netherlands, who were liberated from Nazi occupation in World War II by American soldiers, and who ever since have been grateful for the sacrifice of one man from mission, Pvt. Albert Strahle Jr., who was killed while fighting to liberate the town.

The monument reads as follows:

“Freedom should never be taken for granted”

This Memorial Stone is a tribute to the citizens of Cadier en Keer, Netherlands and to their American liberators: the 1st Battalion, the 117th Regiment, the 30th Infantry Division “Old Hickory”.

Above all to Pvt. Albert H. Strahle, Jr. of Mission, Texas who was killed in action during the liberation day, September 13, 1944.

This monument is a replica of one unveiled on September 11, 2009 in Cadier en Keer.
