Lorenzo de Zavala was a physician who contributed to the writing of the Texas Constitution. He also served as the first vice-president of the Republic of Texas. Earlier de Zavala founded several newspapers whose promotion of democracy led to his imprisonment. He later gained grants allowing 500 families to settle near Galveston Bay.
