Built in the 1750's the house was restored in the 1930's. In addition to the home, a grist mill and carriage house is located on the property. The house is maintained by Gilbert Stuart Memorial, Inc, which operates the property as a museum. The rooms are filled with period furniture.

Stuart at a young age showed his artistic talent and traveled to Scotland with Cosmo Alexander. After returning to Rhode Island Stuart won some commission, however traveled to England to study in 1775. Stuart remained in England for some 20 years, achieving fame as a portrait painter. His zest for living exceeded his income, which for most would have been a lavish income. Stuart returned to the US. Stuart painted three life portraits of George Washington, one of which called "Anthenaeum Portrait" was his most famous painting even though Stuart never finished it.
