He served with the Australian Army & at the time of his death was with the 7 Machine Gun Battalion. It appears he lied about his age on enlistment. His date of birth on the WWII Nominal Roll is given as 7 July 1920 & his date of death was 12 May 1943, which is as it appears on his grave which he shares with his father. Those enlisting nominated their date of birth & no verification was sought.

His father died the same year at age 41 but didn't serve in the Second World War.
