"With low, gray stone walls and a steep roof, Christ Church offers a diminutive, elegant counter to the taller, red-brick no-nonsense Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist churches nearby. In 1876, its spire, a slim cylinder capped with a fanciful rectangular shape, was meant to be the local clock tower, till some of the village fathers decided that the town clock should not be on a church building...congregation of somewhat more than 100 families, of whom about 50 people come to Mass on Sunday."
