The Lincoln Memorial was built to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, and dedicated in 1922. The 189.7' long by 118.5' wide by 99' high, rectangular, marble monument was designed by architect Henry Bacon in the form of a Greek Doric temple. The Lincoln Memorial has a colonnade 36 fluted Doric columns, one for each of the 36 states at the time of Lincoln's death. On the frieze above the colonnade are the names of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death and the dates in which they entered the Union. The interior contains a monumental sculpture of a seated Abraham Lincoln created by Daniel Chester French and carved by the Piccirilli Brothers.
The stamp depicts the Lincoln Memorial surrounded by cherry blossoms. It was a issued by the United States on April 10, 2015 as a joint issue of 4 stamps with Japan to commemorate the gift of cherry blossoms from Japan to the United States in 1912 and the reciprocal gift of flowering dogwood trees to Japan from the United States in 1915.
