"Founder of one of the first families in Chemung County. He was at Pittston in the Wyoming Valley at the time of the Wyoming massacre and brought his family up the Susquehanna to safety in the Elmira area. His youngest, Ichabod, was only a year old at the time.

He was the first member of his family to be buried at The Knoll. The remains of some of the men killed in the Battle of Newtown were there first. This was then part of Baldwin's land. "
