5 km upstream of the mouth, the river crosses the fall to Thunder, which is about 30 m high. The sound of the waterfall evokes the sound of lightning during electrical storms; which would explain the origin of the name.
Descending to the south, this river crosses the northeastern coastal municipality of Rivière-au-Tonnerre, before flowing into the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the Kennedy cove, 2.5 km west from toe to Tonnerre. The municipality of Rivière-au-Tonnerre is located halfway between Havre-Saint-Pierre and Sept-Îles.
The mouth of this river includes a narrow channel used by the boat operators to enter the harbor to take refuge in case of strong waves
À 5 km en amont de l'embouchure, la rivière traverse la chute au Tonnerre, qui est haute d'environ 30 m. Le bruit de la chute d'eau évoque le bruit des éclairs lors des orages électriques; ce qui expliquerait l'origine du toponyme.
En descendant vers le sud, ce cours d'eau traverse la municipalité nord-côtière de Rivière-au-Tonnerre, avant de se déverse dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent dans l'anse Kennedy, à 2,5 km à l'ouest de la pointe au Tonnerre. La municipalité de Rivière-au-Tonnerre est localisée à mi-chemin entre Havre-Saint-Pierre et Sept-Îles.
L'embouchure de cette rivière comporte un étroit chenal qu'utilisent les conducteurs d'embarcations afin d'entrer dans le havre pour se réfugier en cas de fortes vagues
