Situated about 1,000 m above sea level, the plateau suddenly 'takes a dive'; and this greatly frustrated Lt. John Oxley and his surveying team. They tried one side, and then the other without success to get to the bottom of the falls. Eventually following a 'ridge' to the south, not too far from where the Oxley Highway is today, they were able to get to the coast.
There are picnic facilities, and several lookout vantage points. A new suspension footbridge allows access to the northern side of the gorge, with an extended walk to see the lower cascade (from the top of the rim).
About twenty years ago I visited 'the falls', but it was a drought time, and only a trickle was flowing - rather abnormal.
