There are many mysteries regarding the purpose of this ordinary straight back chair perched high on top this old house. Often the houses of seamen would have a widow's walk, a fenced in area on the roof where the wife of a seaman could look out over the ocean while waiting for her husband's return; but only a chair is a bit extreme.
The This Old House website offers a couple of explanations:
This Old House Web Link
"This beautiful 1873 Second Empire has a chair on its roof, and no one's certain why. According to Roadside America (sic - actually Weird NJ) the chair was placed there as a gag by a previous owner. Weird NJ speculates the chair was a sign to passing sailors that indicated they could stop to rest at the house. Another urban legend states the chair was placed there to calm a spirit that violently haunted the property."
The Weird NJ website listed below under Location Website has an long and elaborate article about the house.
