The stuffed head of "Monkey," the foundation sire of the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed which was developed on the King Ranch, is on display at 405 N 6th St, inside the King Ranch Museum in downtown Kingsville TX.

A sign near his head reads as follows:

"MONKEY
Santa Gertrudis Bull

Calved in 1920, on the Laureles Division of the King Ranch, Monkey is known as the foundation sire for the Santa Gertrudis Breed of Cattle. He was said to be a playful calf, hence his name.
The Santa Gertrudis Breed of Cattle were developed on the King Ranch through a long process of line breeding back to this one bull, who was 5/8 British shorthorn and 3/8 Brahman.

The offspring of Monkey became a recognized breed in 1940, when the United States Department of Agriculture recognized the Santa Gertrudis as the first new breed of beef cattle in the world in more than 100 years. This was also the first new breed of beef cattle developed in the Western hemisphere.

Santa Gertrudis cattle do well in various climates; tolerate insects well, and produce a tasty beef product. They hare hardy and can survive heat, droughts, flood conditions, and freezes. These cattle have been raised o five of the world’s continents, and they continue to be first class beef producers.
