"Das Schifferschützen-Corps Oberndorf ist die älteste noch bestehende Korporation im deutschsprachigen Raum. Neben Schutzaufgaben stellten - und stellen noch heute - die Schifferschützen die Ehrengarde bei kirchlichen Umzügen und Feiern. Dem Gedanken an die bei Unfällen ums Leben gekommenen Schiffer und der Segnung des Flusses dient alljährlich zu Fronleichnam der feierliche Brauch des "Himmelbrotschutzens". 1977 beschloss der Ausschuss der Schifferschützen, eine Gedenkstätte für die verunglückten und gefallenen Mitglieder zu errichten, die anlässlich des 700-jährigen Bestehen des Schifferschützen-Corps 1978 enthüllt und eingeweiht wurde." The Schifferschützen-Corps Oberndorf is the oldest surviving corporation in the German-speaking countries and they protect still the church processions and celebrations. 1977 the committee of the Schifferschützen decided to build a memorial to the unfortunate and fallen members which was unveiled in 1978 on the occasion of the 700 anniversary of the inauguration of the Schifferschützen-Corps.
