The Unichem International superfund site at 619 West Commerce Avenue is within the Cooper Commerce Industrial Site. Unichem was a large metal fabrication enterprise and, as part of accepted practice at the time, deposited quantities of perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene into the ground via dry wells. Below the site are two water aquifers. One is shallow and is affected by the chemical waste. The other is much deeper and unaffected. The deeper one is used for potable water and irrigation. The concern at the site was that chemicals would percolate down to the potable water level. Two test wells have been driven, one in to each of the two aquifers. At this point there has not been a migration of chemicals down to the deeper levels.
Immediately south of the site is a multi-acre water recharge facility. Wastewater from the nearby Neely Wastewater Treatment Facility was discharged to percolation ponds to soak through to the aquifer. In the process a significant local birdwatching area was created. The recharged water was moving to the upper aquifer and moving the chemicals toward nearby housing developments. To stop the movement water was redirected from the recharge ponds and used instead to irrigate subdivisions. The recharge ponds were converted to solar charging units with acres of solar panels.
The site is now used by a constructor of solar panel facilities as a steel storage yard and a truck parking.
