The Texas Trail of Fame website (see link) has a depiction of Mr. King, as well as this short biography:
Born to poor Irish parents in New York City, Richard King left home at the age of 12. He was befriended by a ship captain and learned the skill of river navigation and became a riverboat pilot by the age of 16. Two years later he enlisted in the Seminole War in Florida and eventually served in the Mexican War. King began buying land between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande until he had carved out the massive King Ranch.
