(see photo below), there is a very good reason for this. When chartered, on October 6, 1926, the branch was offered the number
to honour the nine charter members.
When the 85th Anniversary of the Coleman Legion was pending, the Crowsnest Pass Herald published an article on the upcoming event, reproduced in part below.
Coleman Legion Celebrates 85 Years
The Coleman Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9, Alberta’s oldest Legion, will be celebrating its 85th anniversary this October, and staff and volunteers are already hard at work preparing for the milestone.
The event will be marked with a black tie banquet and dance on Friday, October 7th, followed by a family fun pig roast and karaoke afternoon the following day.
The banquet will feature catering by Country Encounters, entertainment by Calgary band Turn ‘Em Loose, guest speakers, and interviews with veterans.
The Legion Executive will also be presenting a 70 year pin to Tom Sudworth, the Coleman Legion’s longest member...
...She attributed much of the Legion’s success in recent years to that strong volunteer base, as well as dedicated staff who have been with them for many years, including server Lucille Fraser, who has put in 30 years of hard work.
Another factor, she said, is likely the openness and friendliness of the club.
“Anyone can join, you don’t have to be a veteran,” said Greenwood, “and you don’t have to be a member to come in and have a drink - we take everyone.”
“We’re very friendly and very open, and we’re proud of that.”
