The Coronado Brewing Company is on top of the world — or at least the World Beer Cup.
At the international competition Friday in Denver, Coronado was named “Champion Brewery and Brewmaster” among mid-size breweries. Two of its beers were among the 11 San Diego County winners: Islander IPA won gold in the American-style strong pale ale category, while Old Scallywag was the silver medalist among barley wine-style ales.
"It feels like this is validation," said Shawn DeWitt, Coronado's director of brewery operations. "After 17 years of hard work, we've finally been recognized."
Begun in 2002 by the Brewers Association, a Colorado-based trade group, the World Beer Cup is one of the largest international beer competitions. This year, 4,754 beers were entered from 1,403 breweries representing 58 nations.
“For a brewer,” said Charlie Papazian, the Brewers Association president, “a World Beer Cup gold award allows them to say that their winning beer represents the best of that beer style in the world.”
