A Danish benchmark occurs in Iceland because the island used to be part of Denmark. The benchmark sits on top of a 3-foot tall stone pillar near the Hallgrímskirkja (English: Church of Hallgrímur). On one side of the pillar is a metal plaque that bears the permanent (although somewhat worn) geographic coordinates.
