Located in front of the historic Metolius Depot are a number of brick pavers set in three different plots. This depot is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the only remaining remmant of the town's railroad past. This town was originally platted by the Oregon Trunk Railroad developers in the early 1900s. There is a historical marker located directly behind the brick pavers that reads:
METOLIUS DEPOTEND OF THE LINE
THE RACE BETWEEN THE OREGON TRUNK
R.R. AND UNION PACIFIC R.R. UP THE
DESCHUTES R. ENDED AT METOLIUS FEB.
15, 1911. THE OREGON TRUNK WON. THIS
DEOPT WAS THE END OF THE LINE
SERVING ALL OF CENTRAL OREGON.
My guess is that these brick pavers were part of a fundraiser to restore and maintain this historic station.
