When the Homestake Mine opened in the late 1800s pepole of many nationalities came to Lead to work in the mines looking for a better life in America. A lot of these workers came from Finland and were Lutheran. According to the National Record of Historic Places the Old Finnish Lutheran Church was built in 1907. It has been moved several times. When the Homestake mine started surface mining instead of underground the hole kept getting bigger and any buildings that got in the way were moved or torn down.
