On the grounds of the Cherokee National Capitol stands this very old bronze marker. It is not dated and indicates that it was provided as a public service by the citizens of Tahlequah.
The heavily weathered marker has the designation H 5 at the top, and a relief of an Indian head. The marker reads:
HISTORIC TAHLEQUAH / The Cherokee Advocate owned by the Cherokee Nation was published here. It was printed in Cherokee and English. One half block west in 1848 the first Masonic lodge was established in what is now Oklahoma. The first telephone in this country was put in operation here in 1885. Erected as a public service by the citizens of Tahlequah."
