The monument consists of an old German horn mine made of iron. The mine sits on top of a concrete plinth that has two bronze reliefs embedded in it. One relief is of a nude woman and girl. The other relief is of fallen nude men. Etched into one side of the plinth is: "1914-1918". Etched into another side of the plinth is: "Reist 6-2-1921" [English translation: Erected 6-2-1921].
An inscription is located on the mine portion of the memorial. The following information about the inscription is from T. Michael Keesey's flickr posting:
"FORDUM TIL SJÖMANDENS JAMMER OG DÖD.
NU TIL HANS VELFÆRD, TRYGHED OG BRÖD."
Which I translate literally as:
"Formerly to the seaman's yammer and dead.
Now to his welfare, tautness and bread"
And more gracefully as:
"Once to the seaman, crying and death.
Now to his benefit, security and bread."
Norwegian uses "ø" instead of "ö" and spells it "velferd", not "velfærd" (at least in bokmal--not sure about nynorsk). Not sure why this is different.
