Born in San Antonio de Béxar (then owned by Mexico), José Antonio Navarro is considered the Hispanic Godfather of Texas. He was elected to represent Texas in Mexico’s National Congress and also in conflicts with the government of Santa Anna. A hero of the Texas Revolution, he assisted in the writing of the new Constitution for the Republic of Texas. A lawyer by training, Navarro was elected to the Congress of the new Republic. The county of Navarro was named in honor of his long service to Texas.
