The cholla cactus is referred to as the jumping cactus as it appears to readily attach itself to passing animals of any specie. The loosely attached joints provided a method of propagation as they will sprout to become new plants. This method helps to create cholla "forests" as new plants grow next to each other. Cholla joints are also used by packrats to protect their middens.
