John Ross (1790-1866) was Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828 until his death in 1866. He lead the Cherokee during the very difficult time of their deportation and move to Indian Territory, and through the tumultuous years of the Civil War. The museum is adjacent to the historic Ross family cemetery.

This museum houses exhibits and interactive displays of Cherokee history - the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, and the tribe's great influence in the early years of this country, and its value on the education of its people. The museum also has a gift shop and research area.

The museum is located in a former rural schoolhouse, Rural School #51, which provided education for Cherokee and non-Cherokee from 1913 till the 1950's.

Admission: Adults $3.00; Senior and Students $2.00; Children under 5 Free.
