It's hard to believe that the county jail is so small, but that was in the late 1800's.

"On the site of the old jail is a grante shaft bearing the insciption: 'On this spot were impressioned 1770-1774 John Tanner, Davide Tinsley, Jopseph Weatherford, Apostles of Religious Liberty.'" Virginia: a Guide to the Old Dominion, Oxford University Press, 1941 The building today is now used as office space for the current county government building next door. Access is not permitted unless you know someone in the county system or request to enter. The building is no longer in use.
