From Corporal Mackie's 1863 Medal of Honor citation:
MACKIE, JOHN F.
Rank and organization: Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps
Accredited to: New York
G.O. No.: 17, 10 July 1863
Citation: On board the U.S.S. Calena in the attack on Fort Darling at Drewry's Bluff, James River, on 15 May 1862. As enemy shellfire raked the deck of his ship, Corporal Mackie fearlessly maintained his musket fire against the rifle pits along the shore and, when ordered to fill vacancies at guns caused by men wounded and killed in action, manned the weapon with skill and courage.

Alternate directions to the Mackie family plot: Enter Arlington Cemetery from State Road. You will have the Melrose section on your left. Drive until you see a large bench flanked by two urns and inscribed "Acher." Park. Face the bench and count four rows to the left (rows of stones, not the aisles between them). The Mackie plot is about halfway down that fourth row, on your right: Melrose section, plot 606, grave 2.
His presumed wife and son share the plot with him.
Mackie's gravestone reads:
John F. Mackie
1835-1910
and has a relief of the Medal of Honor below.
His Medal of Honor tombstone reads:
