This is a vertical pink granite slab with engraving on all sides. Atop the pillar is a bronze bust of John Ross, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828-1866.

Engraving reads:

(1) JOHN ROSS / 1790 – 1866 / Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation 1828-1866 / (Seal of the Cherokee Nation) / Loyal to the Cherokee people through five decades of public service”

(2) Quotation from Chief Ross: “I am an old man, and have served my people for fifty years (a)nd now I look back not one act of my public life rises up to abraid me. (m)y heart approves of all I have done. John Ross April 3, 1866” (How many of us can say that!!)

(3) “EDUCATION / George Barbee David Private Tutor / Rev. Gideon Blackburn’s Mission near Chickamauga / South West Point Academy at Kingston, Tennessee / MILITARY SERVICE / Oct. 1813 – Apr. 1814 2nd Lt. and Adjutant – Capt. Sekekee’s Mounted company, Col. (4) Born Oct. 3, 1790 – Turkeytown, Alabama / Married Elizabeth “Quatie” Brown Henley (1791-1830) in 1813 / Five children lived to adulthood: / James McDonald 1814-1864 / William Allen 1817-1891 / Jane 1821-1894 / Silas Dinsmore 1829-1872 / George Washington 1830-1870 / Married Mary Brian Stapler (1824-1865) in 1844 Two Children / Anne Brian 21845-1876 / John Jr. 1847-1905 / Chief Ross died Oct. 1, 1866 in Washington, D.C. and is buried in the Ross family cemetery approximately 1-1/2 miles S.E. of this point."
