This memorial is located on the hall of fame plaza in front of the Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill.

This is a vertical granite slab approximately 30 inches high and 54 inches wide mounted on two granite cubes. Along with the engraved wording, there is a bronze relief attached to the granite showing Rev. Worcester holding a copy of the Cherokee New Testament.

“REV. SAMUEL AUSTIN WORCESTER / Born: January 19, 1798 Worcester, MA – Died April 20, 1859 Park Hill, OK / (Cherokee Name) One Sent / For thirty years a missionary of the American Board of Missions for Foreign Missions Among the Cherokees.

“He came among us, suffered imprisonment rather than betray our cause. His support of the Cherokee people resulted in a United States Supreme Court decision – Worcester v. Georgia, which recognizes tribal sovereignty to the exclusion of State laws.

“Working with Elias Boudinot he translated the New Testament from the original Greek to Cherokee, which established an absolute reference base for our language.

“A selfless servant who worked not for fame or recognition, he was instrumental in the founding of the first Indian newspaper (Cherokee Phoenix), printing the first school text in Indian Territory and the creation of schools of higher learning were here on these grounds.
