Now in its 29th Season, San Jose Stage Company, recognized as The Bay Area’s Premiere Off-Broadway Theatre, presents award-winning, innovative and contemporary programming, showcasing the region’s best new and established artists in a unique off-Broadway style venue. The Stage produces, at a minimum, a 5-play subscription series, inclusive of 120+ performances and 10 scheduled talkbacks. The Stage, the South Bay’s only professional mid-sized theatre organization, was the first group in San Jose to secure and manage its own theatre facility, opening its 200-seat three-quarter thrust venue in 1990. The Stage serves over 25,000 patrons annually.
Over the past 28 Seasons, San Jose Stage Company, garnering critical acclaim, has successfully produced 138 riveting dramas, new musicals and entertaining comedies, presenting 44 new works, including 11 world premieres. The Stage was voted Silicon Valley’s Most Excellent Performing Arts Group in 2004 and 2008 (Silicon Valley Concierge Association) and was honored for the fourth consecutive year for its commitment to excellence by the Wave Magazine and Artsopolis-sponsored Silicon Valley Small Theatre Awards. I AM MY OWN WIFE received the Standout Drama Production Award, ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE received the Standout Technical Design (Sound) Award and ALTAR BOYZ received the Standout Musical Production Award.
San Jose Stage Company was recognized, for the past three seasons, with Silicon Valley Small Theatre Standout Awards for its productions of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (Costumes), GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (Dramatic Production), BLADE TO THE HEAT (Technical Design), INHERIT THE WIND (Classic Production), TRUE WEST (Contemporary Adult Production), URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL (Costumes) and GREATER TUNA (Costume/Technical Design for lights and sound). The Stage’s World Premiere of TENDERS IN THE FOG was awarded 6 prestigious Dean Goodman Choice Awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Theatre” (original writing, ensemble performance and lighting design in addition to a Small Theatre Award for Standout Technical Design (Sound/Lights).
San Jose Stage Company operates under the Bay Area Theatre (BAT) Contract, a collective bargaining agreement with Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Manager in the United States. The Stage is a member of Theatre Bay Area (TBA) and a founding partner of TBA’s Community Box Office Network (CBON) and the Costume Co-op (TBACC). The Stage is a constituent of the Theatre Communications Group (TCG) and a member of Americans for the Arts, as well as a founding member of the San Jose Arts Alliance.
San Jose Stage Company is funded, in part, by a grant from Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the California Arts Council, by a Cultural Affairs grant from the City of San Jose and the many individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations whose contributions make great theatre possible.

First arts organization in San Jose to acquire and manage its own facility -- Opened new facility "THE STAGE" (1990).
Foremost employer of local artistic talent – contracting, on average, 85-100 local actors, directors, designers, scenic artists and theatrical technician each season.
Participant in the City of San Jose’s Arts Express Program for the past 24 years since its inception as Arts Education Week.
Voted Most Excellent Performing Arts Group 2008, Silicon Valley Concierge Association.
Launched (2006) ACTORS’ LAB in support of the Company’s multi-level educational outreach programs, dedicated to developing a practical young audience membership.
Voted Best Theatre Company in 2004, Silicon Valley Concierge Association.
Co-founded (2003) the Arts Alliance, a coalition of arts organizations as a forum to discuss and respond to specific challenges related to mid-sized arts organizations and to devise solutions.
Established (2001) SPECIAL CONNECTIONS PROGRAM, a distinctive outreach and audience development program providing a myriad of opportunities to broaden the community’s awareness of the Company and the artistic work it presents, while showcasing a nonprofit community partner’s link to each of its productions. Community Partners have included San Jose State University’s Steinbeck Center, PlaneTree Health Library, The Health Trust, Our City Forest, Dublin San Jose Sister City Committee, InnVision and Second Harvest Food Bank, among others.
First recipient of Mayor’s Arts Venture Grant (2000) – Mayor Ron Gonzales, City of San Jose.
Established (1998) COSTUME CO-OP to provide a major cost-effective costume resource in the Bay Area. Founding partners include San Jose Stage Company, Teatro Visión and TheatreWorks.
Established (1996) COMMUNITY BOX OFFICE NETWORK – a Bay Area-wide project providing professional box office services for smaller arts organizations. Theatres participating under this partnership are San Jose Stage Company (San Jose), Brava Theatre and Fort Mason Box Office (San Francisco), Willows Theatre Company (Concord) and Broadway By the Bay (San Mateo).
Established (1991-2003) and co-produced the DOWNTOWN ARTS SERIES, featuring theatre, dance and music performed by multicultural and emerging arts organizations. Cited by California Arts Council as "A MODEL PROGRAM".
Established (1984) the "BAY AREA THEATRE" CONTRACT, a new collective bargaining agreement with Actors' Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers for mid-size theatres. Currently, the theatres operating under this agreement include San Jose Stage Company (San Jose), Magic Theatre (San Francisco), Marin Theatre Company (Marin), Aurora Theatre (Berkeley) and Willows Theatre (Concord)."
