"A huge piece of public art is going on display where a mammoth fossil was found on the banks of San Jose’s Guadalupe River 12,000 years ago.

The 12-foot-tall steel piece titled “Lupe” symbolizes where mammoths roamed the area 12,000 years ago.

San Jose’s Public Art Director Jennifer Easton says it ties in well with an existing exhibit along the trail.

“The Children's Discovery Museum has an exhibit about the mammoths and so we thought it would be an interesting parallel to have something at the Children's Discovery Museum and then if families came out on the trail they could also see the sculpture nearby to where the actual discovery was.”

One of the artists who designed Lupe is Freya Bardell of Los Angeles.

She says, “Part of the concept was to create a life size mammoth and have that feeling of how small a human is in comparison to this beast that once roamed this valley and I think I really felt that when I saw it.”

Lupe is being installed where the Guadalupe River Trail passes under Trimble Road and should be completed by Friday." (visit link)
