The Butler-McCook House was built in 1782 by Dr. Daniel Butler and served as his home and office. It is a typical two story house of the period with central hallway plan and two chimneys. In the rear there is an addition which was an older, about 1740, blacksmith shop that was converted into a kitchen when the main house was built. Later nineteenth century additions include additional chimneys, dormer windows, a second story gable in the center of the facade, and a porch over the front door.

Another family member John Butler McCook, annexed his office to the homestead in 1895. Here his children were born. His son Dr. John Butler McCook practiced medicine in this house until the early 20th century.

The Victorian ornamental gardens of the Butler-McCook Homestead were designed in 1865 by the Swiss landscape architect Jacob Weidenman. The home and gardens are currently maintained by Connecticut Landmarks, an organization that restors and operates significant historic house museums in Connecticut.
