This is a second intact U.S. benchmark found at Cape Spear. During WWII the U.S. military manned a fort here to defend the very important St. John's Harbour from German u-boat attacks. Remains of the fort and its "disappearing" cannons can still be found on site.

Cape Spear Lighthouse, which this waymark is in the shadow of, is a Canadian National Historic Site. Cape Spear is the eastern most point of land in North America.
