According contemporary accounts in the Connecticut Courant lightning "struck a chimney... forcing its way through the garret stairs into a closet" The bolt then traveled along a stud "directly over the front door where Captain Seymour was standing." He was instantly killed.
Congregational ministers then used his death to warn people to embrace God immediately, in case they too would be suddenly called to Final Judgment.
The slate gray gravestone has an angel sculpted in the lunette and the following inscription:
Here Lies Interd, the
Remains of Capt. Israel
Seymour who was kill'd
by Lightning Augst 14th
1784, in ye 49th year
of his Age.
With awful rev'rence GOD adore
Whose holy Hand with Sov'reign pow'r
Did in an Instant stop his Breath
And clos'd his Eyes in Sleep of Death
