In February 1892 the Cabinet of the Governor of New Caledonia offered the a Mayor of Nouméa a draft monumental fountain to build on one of the squares of the city. Located in the center of what is now known as Coconut Plaza, the fountain was made between 1892 and 1894 by the sculptor Mahoux.
Like many building projects, the fountain was fraught with challenges, with cost overruns, the price of convict labour cost increases during the construction period, and Mahoux himself underestimated the cost of its work. For its part, the municipality was also slow to install the water supply to the fountain and is not suitable for Nouméa lift.
The monument itself is set in stone, and is set on solid concrete foundations, consists of a large octagonal pool and is raised three levels. Above, another smaller-scale basin is surmounted by a circular basin. The whole is crowned by a statue pouring water in the upper basin and flowing into the lower basins. The young woman who served as model for Mahoux statue was a 17-year old and was named Celeste Mohammed.
The Celestial fountain is also the zero point mileage of all roads of New Caledonia.
