Cumulus Gate Pavilion For Richard Pearse is a shining example of New Zealand art by sculptor Gregor Kregar. Gregor is New Zealand based and is regularly commissioned to work all over the world.
This sculpture is loosely based on cumulus clouds and reflects his strong interest in Richard Pearse and his pioneering experiments in aviation.
Gregor wanted this sculpture to reflect its surroundings, including the lighting colours of the terminal building, the inground lights that shine on it at night and the native flax planted around it.
He did a lot of research into prismatic geometry, as well as the connections between nature, mathematics and modular form, then made all the geometric calculations required for the sculpture.
This sculpture is made of 1000 pieces of hand-cut stainless steel, which are held in place by 8000 bolts.
