This building was constructed in 1895 as the Federal Courthouse for Love County. During Indian Territory days, land disputes, especially due to Indian allotments were handled here. This Federal courthouse was the court of Judge Overton "Sobe" Love (1823-1906), for whom Love County was named. Judge Love was a Chickasaw judge and was among the Chickasaw forced to move to Indian Territory in the 1840s during Indian removal. He was one of the largest landowners in the Chickasaw Nation, farming and raising cattle on 8,000 acres of Red River bottomland . As a judge in the Dawes Commission era, he worked to add tribal members to the Chickasaw Roll of Citizenship. He also served as a Chickasaw representative to Congress and was named Treaty Commissioner on behalf of the Chickasaw Nation. {Wikipedia}

This is a two-story building constructed of rough-cut Native sandstone. The upper floor windows have stone stills and arched stone lintels. They are currently covered with wood paneling. This is a rectangular building with a flat roof and stone coping. The entrance is a single door flanked by small windows. Clapboard siding has been added to this storefront, with a shingled canopy.

Attached to the building is the Fire Department, and a large overhead door on this building opens to a bay where a fire truck is kept. The building is currently the home of Marietta’s City Hall. City offices and the city court are here. The Fire Department is located directly east.

This 120 year old building has been beautifully maintained and is quite functional today.
