The memorial commemorates the crossing of the Balonne River by explorer Thomas Mitchell on St. Georges Day, 23 April 1846. Having crossed the river Mitchell camped, calling the crossing St. Georges Bridge which was the origin of the town of St. George.

The memorial is a slab of polished black granite set on a cairn of cemented river stones.

Sir Walter Campbell A.C. Q.C. was born 4 March 1921, died 4 September 2004. He was an Australian judge, administrator and governor. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland, Chancellor of the University of Queensland and governor of Queensland. His studies at the University of Queensland were interrupted by the Second World War when he took up service in the RAAF (airforce). Injuring himself in a bi-plane accident he was made commander of a Liberator base on the Darling Downs.

He was admitted to the Bar in 1948, became a Q.C. in 1960 & appeared at the Privy Council in London. He was made Governor of Queensland on 22 July 1985 & served during the tumultuous period of Jo Bjelke-Petersen's government, retiring in July 1992.

THE site for the Thomas Mitchell Memorial commemorating his crossing of the Balonne River on St Georges Day, 23rd April 1846 was dedicated by his Excellency the Governor of Queensland Sir Walter Campbell Q.C. on 24th October 1988 on this our Bicentennial Year.
