St. George is on the Balonne River & has been subject to extreme floods despite there being a weir on the river, one purpose of which was to prevent flooding. The map explains that during the years 2010, 2011 & 2012 the Balonne Shire Council spent $750,000 erecting temporary levees to protect the town from major flooding.
The new permanent levee bank cost $3.7 million & required 28,000 metres of fill. It has 5 penstock culverts, sloping sides covered in grass to prevent erosion & large temporary barriers to seal off three streets during floods. The levee is 3 metres wide, 1 high.
Location Name: Stage 1, Earthen Levee.
