St. George is the service centre for vast irrigated lands watered by a dam & weirs on the Balonne River. There is a weir in the town hence the large body of water appearing on town maps.
The church has a tall bell tower & a formal entry through a sunken garden. Louvred windows allow ventilation on hot Summer days. A separate chapel is to one side of the garden.
